John R. Allegra, MD, PhD, recently traveled to Cap-Haitien, Haiti, as part of a medical mission.
During the mission organized by Stephen Gebhardt of St. Matthew the Apostle Parish in Randolph, N.J., Dr. Allegra visited the Missionaries of the Poor orphanage and senior citizens home. He and other members of the medical team, including his brother, provided care to residents and staff.
“We mainly treated non-healing open wounds,” explained Dr. Allegra, who is an attending emergency physician at Morristown (N.J.) Medical Center. Dr. Allegra is a partner of Emergency Medical Associates and is president of Emergency Medical Associates Research Foundation. They also established contacts with local hospitals to assist the Missionaries of the Poor.
This is approximately the twentieth medical mission for Dr. Allegra. His support for the people of Haiti did not end with his latest trip; he and his wife Diane are sponsoring the education of two Haitian children.
