CIM Position

A Clinical Information Manager (CIM) has a unique opportunity to work closely with an attending physician and the entire healthcare team in the Emergency Department (ED). The position is popular among those who aspire to become a Physician, Physician Assistant, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, EMT, or Healthcare Administrator.

The CIM works closely with our ED physicians to document a physician note for each patient in our state-of-the-art electronic medical record system (EDIMS).  To obtain the history and physical exam findings, a CIM may accompany the physician into the patient’s room and take notes during the initial encounter or the physician will dictate information to the CIM who is based at a computer terminal in a dictation room or at the nurses’ station in the ED.

The CIM transcribes vital signs, medications, and allergies as well as patient orders (such as medications, IVs).  He/she also documents procedures performed in the ED, consultations or advice obtained by the physician, and conversations with other physicians or patient’s family.   Under the direction of the physician, the CIM may document discharge instructions, prescriptions, or diagnoses in the chart.

The CIM keeps track of the diagnostic tests ordered and will inform the physician when the results are returned to the department; this facilitates the physician’s decision making process on the patient.  Furthermore, the CIM will obtain the physician’s interpretation/reading of diagnostic studies (such as EKGs and x-rays) and enter that information into the physician note.

Our data shows an increase in physician productivity and an improvement in the quality of life for EMA physicians who utilize CIMs.
