Two Emergency Medical Associates' Partner Hospitals Receive HealthGrades’ Emergency Medicine Excellence Awards

April 28, 2011

Emergency Medical Associates (EMA), headquartered in Livingston, N.J., congratulates two of its hospital partners, Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, N.J., and Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J., on receiving the HealthGrades’ Emergency Medicine Excellence Award for 2011, placing them in the top 5% of emergency departments nationwide.

“We are proud of the work we do with all our hospital partners and are pleased that two of our teams have received this prestigious award” said Raymond Iannaccone, MD, FACEP, president and chief executive officer of Emergency Medical Associates.  “EMA is committed to delivering clinical and service excellence to ensure all of our emergency department patients receive the very best in care.”

The HealthGrades’ study found that there are significant differences in outcomes between the best-performing hospitals and all other hospitals with regard to emergency medicine. By analyzing patients admitted through the emergency department with one of 12 diagnoses (cohorts), including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Diabetes Acidosis and Coma, Heart Attack, Respiratory Failure, Sepsis, and Stroke, the study identified the top 5% of hospitals in the nation with the lowest combined rates of mortality for those cohorts. As mentioned in the study, “knowing which hospitals in your area perform best when it comes to treating patients who arrive through the emergency room can greatly increase your chances of survival.” The study determined that patients treated in the recognized top 5% of hospitals have a 40% lower risk of mortality.

“Our physician group has a strong history of providing exceptional emergency medicine,” said John Fontanetta, MD, FACEP, Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Clara Maass, and a partner with EMA.  “However, in today’s complex environment it is not enough to just have excellent doctors you also need to have the best tools available. Both EMA and Clara Maass recognize this and provide us with excellent support and practice solutions, including an advanced EMR, EDIMS; partnering with us to achieve this great honor.”
